Ziad Rahbani in Damascus, Syria
August 19, 2008

Lyrics by Ziad Rahbani: (Translated & posted by arabviolin 11-18-2010)

"What have these days come to?"

What have these days come to?
They say the rich are giving to the poor
As if money appeared from nowhere
Here is a little for the poor, and here is a lot for the wealthy
"The beautiful lady woke up at dawn to knead the bread"
*El Helwa Di: This last line is in reference to a traditional Sayyid Darwish song about waking up poor skillful workers early at sunrise to work and unlock the door to God's treasures.

They say to you that you can tell from the sweat on his forehead
That this man has earned money
Well then how would you explain all his millions? (money)
When not once have we seen him sweat?
It's not true, it's not true, it's not true that love conquers all...
*"Huwa Saheeh, Al Hawa Ghallab": In reference to a well known song by Um Kulthoum called "Huwa Sheeh, Al Hawa Ghallab", about feeling deserted, empty promises, distrust, grief, and pain.

The wealthy man, without being asked, would like to distribute money
Is he a miser? On the contrary. He was caring about all you poor deserving people.

Each one of us has a "stylo" *stylo refers to a fancy pen, like a fountain pen
Which doesn't forbid there to be justice/equality? (between poor & rich)
Bring me the pen so I can sign [a contract] for you
so that all of humanity will awaken tomorrow
Oh peace
Oh peace
Oh peace, say hello

All of the money that is stored away
Why can't it be counted, or measured?
It's because it was stolen away from the pockets of the people
And it needs to be returned to the pockets of humanity...
Here it is (the money)
Here it is. Here it is right where it belongs.

  • Where is the translation, these words are great to be translated . if it's not available

I would omit the word (TRANSLATION) from the title. it's simply misleading .

    in Respect .

    Monadel Herzallah

  • @monadelh i translated it myself, you just have to click the tiny downward arrow to the right of the info box. enjoy!

  • Great Rahbani! Wonderfull song! Best and brillant lyrics! The master Rahbani is a revolutionary and used his talents to protest in the favor of his people! Schukran Jazilan Monadelh for posting the full translation and notes! Peace be upon you all!

  • Thank you 1001 times for supplying original text and translation into english. Now this marvellous song can be understood by the world community ! Ziad Rahbani is my generation and I feel great sympathy for him. This song makes me want to improve my still very poor arabic.
