Aspen's new certified glass panel "Evolution" display updates older "steam gauge" cockpits and offers a low cost cost easily expandable option for pilots seeking a more capable cockpit instrument panel.
it doesn't like aerobatic flight. it will freak out and loose which way is up. Once established on level flight it comes right back. Though it doesn't hurt the unit in anyway. This is much better than uncagable AI's that will tear themseelves apart after repeated loops and rolls.
Well no, but when FAA regulations require a particular instrument it doesn't even have to be in the airline policy, it has to be done no matter what because the FAA overrules any airline policy.
For certified aircraft I believe it is required to have a standby artificial horizon if you are flying IFR and just wan't to install the Aspen PFD. I don't believe the DG is required for IFR if you have a compass but I could be wrong, I need to review the regs. For experimental, I don't believe any mechanical instruments are required, however, any smart person would have at least a backup mechanical airspeed and altimeter. Don't quote me on this though.
If anyone has had experience with the Aspen and the comparable Garmin system, which do you prefer?
I am thinking the Aspen Evo is better for retrofitting older instrument panels. Very intrigued with the new SVT. The database is synced to the GPS nav correct?
@forces077 the most basic aspen is a few grand more but thats not including install. the aspen DOES support traffic and wx as long as you have a traffic or the aspens own weather sensor installed.
im unsure what i should get, the garmin 696 or this, what i dont understand is how the aspen is $2000 more for the most basic version and from this video does not support such wx or traffic info, is this because the garmin can only be used to aid navigation and not act as a PFD? thanks

@HDaviator well smart and actual faa and airline policy do not have to be one and the same.

I was talking mour about objects in the cockpit hitting in, not really sunlight.
Most things that are LCD screens are very fragile and only takes a small bump ot puncture and the whole screen is useless.
But, Im not bashing this product, I dont know too much about it really.
