Sebastian Junger, an adventurous reporter perhaps best known as the bestselling author of the The Perfect Storm (which was turned into a blockbuster film starring George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, and John C. Reilly) and War and is a contributing editor to Vanity Fair, and Tim Hetherington, a photographer with extensive experience in war zones became filmmakers and created the film Restrepo, which some say is a lead contender for an Oscar.

RESTREPO (trailer) is a feature-length documentary that chronicles the deployment of a platoon of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan's Korengal Valley. The movie focuses on a remote 15-man outpost, Restrepo, named after a platoon medic who was killed in action. It was considered one of the most dangerous postings in the U.S. military. This is an entirely experiential film: the cameras never leave the valley; there are no interviews with generals or diplomats. The only goal is to make viewers feel as if they have just been through a 94-minute deployment. This is war, full stop. The conclusions are up to you. The film won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize Documenatry in 2010. The New York Times calls it an impressive, even heroic feat of journalism, the LA Times says coming after The Hurt Locker...This movie gives you the same edge-of-your seat sense of suspense and awe, New York Magazine stated it is a riveting journey into combat, and the Observer says it is exemplary.
