READ THIS FIRST This guide is to add PERMANENT subtitles to AVI. After you complete the process, unless you still have the original AVI file, there is no going back.
Feel free to ask questions.
You have to convert an .srt subtitle to an .ssa subtitle because VirtualDub can only read .ssa.

Problem "Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'XVID' (unknown)
VirtualDub requires a Video For Windows (VFW) compatible codec" solution here: http://www.xvidmovies.com/codec/

The vdf format subtitler is needed to ADD the subtitles, it doesn't mean the subtitles are in vdf format, they need to be in ssa format because VirtualDub only reads ssa. Anyone who comments asking this question will not have an answer.

Ok, I finally got the link for the .vdf file, so to anyone who doesn't find it here is the link: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/subtitle_tools/virtualdub_su...

  • Dude thank you a lot ! I dont know you but when I see you I will buy you a beer . :D <3

  • @srbin831 Hahahahaha looking forward to it, bro! :D

  • I have the same problem as jojosicecep, when I try to convert the subs from srt to ssa, I get the "input file error, subtitle # 1", I click ok and it says Job finished. I can find the ssa file , but when I load it in virtual dub, the subs don't appear at all. Do you know why?

  • @sofro07 That means that subtitle # 1 is missing from the subtitles file. Since you can't possibly know what that subtitle was, you should either a) download another subtitle or b) open the subtitle file in NotePad and type something to fill in the missing space, such as a coma or a period. It should be in the proper format, though. Try to figure it out using the other subtitle lines as a guide.

  • OK, first of all I have read INFO and few pages of comments. I have next problem:

I follow instructions all the time, everything is fine. But when I'm supposed to save movie at the end, it has 5.5GB and original .AVI file has 700MB?!

How's that possible? I wanted to upload video to YT, but I can't wait 3 days to upload 5.5GB...

    Any suggestions?

  • okay, i did exactly the same thing like you did. but when i try to save the new .avi file, it doesn't convert or something. when i go to the map where i saved the avi file, the new video is only 10KB. help please!!

  • Uhm, when I'm creating a new AVI with sub added. The file is too big!! There's a way to compressed it or to lessen the file size? Sorry I'm just new here in PC softwares..
