  • Nepotism is favoritism granted to relatives or friends, without regard to their merit. The cultural aspect inherited in Japan is the iemoto system. The title of iemoto in most cases is hereditary. It is commonly transmitted by direct line, or by adoption. Once the "successor-to-be" is officially recognized, that successor-to-be may be appropriated the title of "Wakasōshō" or as in Aikido Wakasensei. You cannot impose western characteristics to thousand of years of Japanese history and tradition.

  • The linage gives stability and is not a question of who is best – it’s not a competition. In my view Doshu Sensei is the best leader – you may not agree and have someone else in mind – and there we have the fist problem in the very hypothetical question.

  • Apparently you cant see the difference between a show and a real fight? This is a showcase and of course Doshu and his partner are collaborating showing Aikido in its diversity. Having blind faith in just one style is stupid the will always be one out there that are stronger, faster and wiser.

  • @vulinh90

Thanks for the information everyone. I posted this message several months ago and got my answer from members like yourself and my teachers. Everyone basically said the same thing it's Japanese tradition. I was also told that Koichi Tohei was supposed to be the 1 st Doshu which may have changed history. Apparently, Kisshomaru discovered his father was going to pass it on to Tohei when they were travelling promoting Aikido together. There was a fight and Tohei left Hombu.

  • @Tarc5150 it is like a tradition of the King give his throne to the prince. Moreover in aikido there is no tournament or fighting event to choose out the best aikidoist. Ueshiba is not only the title that any aikidoist should know but also a title for aikidoist to respect because that is the family who found aikido and train other students. it's like a root of aikido. And absolutely not any trained students from Ueshiba are confident enough to say that they surpass the Ueshiba family.

  • I trained aikido about 5 years, and earned the 2nd kyu from a man I realy look up too. Is is bad that he died, bucose he know the true aikido. He did things that I first thought was imposible. But it wasn't. It is all in the mind. This day I stoped aikido, becose my study takes to much time. But I do am planning to pratice aikido again, I just do it at home now. If you once praticed aikido, you will continue to do so the rest of your life. It is not a sport, but a way of life.

  • I train and love Aikido. However, I have trained in shorinji kempo, wing chun, and kali and read about many other arts over the last 18 years. What I don't get and it bothers me is the nepotism found in Aikido. Can somebody explain? Why does the son and grandson automatically assume the position of doshu in Aikido? I think the best Aikidoist should gain such a title not be entitled to it because his last name is Ueshiba.

  • if you see any martial art being used in a real fight on youtube, its probably fake. By the time the person gets attacked, and solved the problem, you wouldnt be able to get your phone out in time. Most times you wouldn't even know you're watching martial arts

  • It's harder to stage a martial art demo, and remember every way the uke will attack, than it is to just go with the flow. Its called randori, and is in many forms on martial arts

aikido isnt used in the mma, because too much of it is small joint manipulation. You're right you wouldnt flip. They flip to avoid muscle damage and dislocation, its a trained response, not a natural one.

  • i would also like to see them in real situations and not just demo's.
