Mission San José de Comondú was one of the Jesuit missions established
early in the 1700's in Baja California Sur, Mexico, west of Loreto and
Mission San Javier. This is us in our Sportsmobile-type 4x4 van on
the "road" leading East. It took us all day to travel 52 miles. There
are two extremely remote goat ranches but no cars can travel on this
terrain. My opinion? Never take this road. Ever.

  • There is now a well-engineered paved road from Loreto to within a few miles of San Javier. The remaining dirt road is graded and easily drivable in a passenger car.

  • @mhshapiro That's not the road in this video.

  • A guidebook told us that the Comondus were "quaint colonial villages" and that the road was one of the best drives in Baja. I wanted to get my hands around that author's neck. We did see some amazing plant life and will be posting more pics at BajaBus.org (work in progress.)
