Quarter note tempo I keep throughout isn't all that accurate, but hopefully you get the point!
These are some of the most common subdivisions in 4/4, but things get way more complex when you start to, say, lay 7 beats over 3, for example.
The main point of this video is to help drummers understand the length / duration / sustain of various notes. Often us drummers are concerned with simply WHEN to hit the drum and that's it, and since drums don't really sustain, we leave the whole 'long tone' thing to our rolls (where we fill up the silence by continuing to hit the drum/cymbal).
Ties are another matter with rhythm notation, and generally they mean this: hit the first note and sustain through all of that note's duration AND the duration of the (second) tied note WITHOUT re-attacking. ie Don't strike the drum/cymbal on the second note.
If there's an accent above/below the second note (the one following the tie), then you DO attack. See the PAS rudiments for examples of this notation.
