Inspired by and intended as a sequel to THE GUNS OF NAVARONE(1961), this WW 2 action movie is often cited by critics as a lackluster and a poor sequel. If given a fair chance, it is very enjoyable, and features great acting, production, and a good plot overall. Robert Shaw and Harrison Ford have co-starring leads, with Ford being fresh from the role that made him a household name--Han Solo in STAR WARS. Ford portrays American Ranger Lt. Col. Mike Barnsby, the leader of a commando unit sent to Yugoslavia to destroy a vital bridge that will allow Nazi forces to move into Partisan territory. Shaw's character is Major Mallory, who joins Barnsby's unit but has a mission of his own: seek out and elminate a double agent operating with the Yugoslavian resistance fighters. This movie is also of note because it marked Robert Shaw's final film appearance. He died of a heart attack shortly after finishing the project. Edward Fox, Carl Weathers, Alan Badel, Franco Nero, Richard Kiel and Barbara Bach costar.

  • Carl Weather's and Harrison Ford sure look young in this. I heard Robert Shaw passed on not long after this film was made. On AMC or Turner Classic Movie's, the host told the story that, most of the film was made in the then Fully Unified Yugoslavia. Now Croatia, just like Kelly's Heroes. Between shooting the actors and film crew would visit a Brothel just across the Italian Border. This freaked the movie company out because the Mafia had recently been kidnapping and ransoming Foreign Tourist's.

  • This was Ford's first lead role after Star Wars, and he was 35 when this one was filmed. Weathers was 30 himself. Shaw died about 6 months after filming was completed for this movie--he was 51 and suffered a heart attack during a break from filming AVALANCHE EXPRESS, his very last role.

  • Great novel - great movie!

  • You've got to love those old fashioned trailers!

  • full movie---?

  • And then my wife says, where's the salt? And I say How fuck should I know ya spank?

  • @SupportingActor Harrison Ford appeared briefly in Francis Ford Coppola's "Apocalypse Now" , released in theatres in 1979, but actually shot in the Phillipines in 1976-77. He played one of the officers briefing Martin Sheen's Captain Willard before his mission to take out Kurtz's Marlon Brando with "extreme prejudice". lol Ford also appeared in 1973's "American Graffitti", dir. by George Lucas, as hot-rodder Bob Falfa. All b4 "Star Wars" & "Force 10". LOVE his acting!

  • Great cast this movie has! :D

I mean 4 persons from the Bond-films (Barbara Bach, Robert Shaw, Richard Kiel and Edward Fox) and on top of that Harrison Ford and Carl Weathers.

Great film by the way :D

  • War movies aren't my favorite ones, but this one is really enjoyable.

  • great film:) love those 60-70's war film.

  • This is a good movie. However, I did feel sorry for the Carl Weathers character in the movie as his character suffered quite a bit of racial discrimination as alot of black americans did at that time. At least his character didn't die in the movie which thankfully gets rid of the 'Sole Black Character Dies Cliche' in this movie. Also, I had no idea that Robert Shaw was British in real life as I originally thought he was American.
