Nice boom microphone @ 2:49, right above Steve's head. Despite being a technical failure in camera work, the microphone ascends at a nearly perfect speed, resulting in quite an interesting little phenomenon.

Steve Allen is a bit dated now but back then he would put things on which no one else would. He was the only one to invite Lenny Bruce on.

@scabbybuttcrack In the film he made just before this he plays a Monk and had a partly shaved head. It's re growing here. Frank had a full head of hair.

Excellent! Thanks for sharing!

I give Zappa credit for experimenting with this. Very innovative.

Did a bird shat on top of Frank's head? Or was he balding?

everyone who's tried expressing an uncommon idea or sentiment has been ridiculed by the ignorant. since it's such a common occurance to me, I too believed Steve Allen to be cornering the artist as I've seen Letterman do on countless occasions.. knowledge that Steve Allen was free flowing is all I needed, so you needn't fight someone who's backing up what they feel is a beautiful mind being muted yet again.. I too like thinking out loud. my message is 'help one another understand one another"

I highly doubt Mr Steve Allen decided who/what got on his show. he's a host. not a producer
I can't believe the number of idiot comments about Steve Allen posted here. Frank Zappa was on the show because he admired Steve and Allen gave him a long segment because he liked what Zappa was doing. It's playful and their both laughing! I'll bet every negative comment was posted by someone under 35.That's the state of pop culture today. Ignorance, hate.and extreme intolerance is"cool". Steve Allen was the counter-culture until SNL 20years later.

I don't think you get Steve Allen. He likes clearly likes Frank Zappa and wouldn't have had him on the show if he didn't appreciate Frank as a musician.
