Extremely rare footage of Judy Garland receiving a Tony Award for her historic engagement at the Palace Theatre. I don't think this has ever been on Youtube, or widely broadcast. This is raw, uncut footage of Judy giving her 'Thank you' speech. There are a few things that are particularly fascinating about it.
First, Judy seems very shy & vulnerable. Normally, I try to avoid this kind of interpretation. I'm not a master of body language & speech. But THIS - THIS is a facet of Judy that while expressed many times by those who knew her has rarely been captured in a moment for the world to see. Of course, we've seen it in her movies & concerts, we hear it in her singing ... this is different. THIS is Judy ... & I see something that I hadn't clearly seen before ... how vulnerable & fragile she really was. She stumbled to think that others could even see the beauty of her gifts & appreciate them. Amazing. Second, in the background you can hear the voice of a 'mystery man' giving directions. Clearly, Judy had to give her speech more than once for his satisfaction. Judy was known as 'the one-take girl' ... & yet here, when she has to find the words to acknowledge an award given to her for something that she gave to us, she seems to hesitate ... her eyes cast downward several times.'Please like me, I can't believe you like me.'
We love you, Judy! Thank you.
The 6th Annual Tony Awards (Antoinette Perry Awards for Excellence in Theatre), presented by Helen Hayes & the American Theatre Wing, took place at the Waldorf-Astoria Grand Ballroom on March 30th 1952.
This may be a press release ... it's difficult to determine, except for the possible clue at the beginning. There are other recipients on the complete footage who's speech's are intact, as a single take. I do know that the awards were in thier infancy & not quite as formal at the time. If anyone has more information, please share.
I left the footage of Judy completely intact with rough cuts & flaws, de-synchronized audio & out of focus ... just as it was. I like it this way.

  • LOOK at that face! How can anyone not love that face! She was so genuine and appreciative. She was a very humble girl! Today there is no one like her around. They walk up pick their award and have the cockiness and feeling of "entitlement" Judy was a true pro! Thank you so much for finding yet another Gem! This is for Judy if she can hear us "Thank you Miss Garland for granting us the priviledge of experiencing your Vast Ocean of talent. You have no Idea what you have given the entire world" xo

  • Absolutely enchanting. What a pleasure to see Judy accept a great honor. Thank you so much!

And to below --What do you mean "she was still so beautiful at this point" ? Goodness, the lady was 30 years old here, "at this point" (?). Have you seen how gorgeous she was in her 40's on The Judy Garland Show, or later on Hollywood Palace, or Sammy Davis, or at her 67 Palace show, or on What's My Line, or on Merv Griffen, or Johnny Carson in 68? Yes, she was "still" quite beautiful her entire life.

  • may she rest in peace

  • She deserved more. Bastards.

  • This should've tooken place SO MUCH MORE in her life than it did cuz the woman deserved recognition like this SO MUCH MORE then she got while she was still hear to get it I swear.

Everyone seemed more interested in bringing her down instead of acknowledging & appreciating how unbelievably GIFTED this humble sweetheart was & how much she contributed & changed the world of entertaiment as we know it to be today during the very short time we had her among us until she was gone, its a sad shame.

  • @NFitalianGuy I have to HEAVILY disagree when you say no one is as humble when accepting an award. When Lady Gaga received her first onscreen grammy in 2011, you can so tell her humble ness and how shocked she was to get it. She is not cocky at all. Im not comparing the two, because Judy is definitely one of a kind. But i think you should rethink what you say because as time passes no one can replace her or be like her but there are people who share her humbleness. Saying whats right. Period

  • Pretty humble but did she pay her hotel bill the next day?

  • this is great, thank you

  • oh my god, she's so sweet it literally breaks my heart. SO HUMBLE and thankful, unlike alot of famous people now. She is the definition of a STAR. I don't think she ever realized just how much she impacted music and cinema. Gorgeous woman, throughout her whole life, big or small, young or older. She worked so hard, and didn't get the praise she deserved. Unexplainably remarkable <3

  • The World's Greatest Entertainer...enough said :-)

    Davidx

  • How pretty and healthy she looks, she truly does look happy, but having done that when getting awards, not speeches, but eyes downcast or that, you like me? you really like me! kind of action, so much, seems to be the real Judy

  • @Herestome2 TRUDAT!!!
