"Patapan" (or "Pat-a-pan") is a French Christmas carol in Burgundian dialect, later adapted into English. It was written by Bernard de La Monnoye (1641--1728) and first published in Noël bourguignons in 1720. Its original title is "Guillô, Pran Ton Tamborin".

The carol revolves around the birth of Jesus Christ, and is told from the perspective of shepherds playing simple instruments—flutes and drums—the onomatopoetic sound of which gives the song its name; "patapan" is meant to mimic the sound of the drum, and an accompanying lyric, "tu-re-lu-re-lu," the flute. This is similar conceptually to the carol "The Little Drummer Boy", with its chorus of "pa-rum-pa-pum-pum."

  • @Remember1973 I agree with that completely!

  • This song is so inspiring to me, just helps motivate me to write. I think this version without words is the best, it just seems more intense and emotional...but that's my biased opinion.

  • @shofer94 hahahahahahahahahaha, that was awesome. I applaud you for the wonderful use of sarcasm.

  • @originalprofundo Not everyone does housework while listening to this ;) im a 17 year old boy that plays football for the high school team O.o Yeah and in the 1700's, they wore shit like that oh and look when it was composed. WOW! 1700's... What a coincidence.

  • If you like this music, please, for the love of Jesus our Lord and Savior, do NOT watch the silly photos of people posing in silly Garb trying to pretend like they were born during the time of our Lord Christ. This music was composed in the '90s on a Midi Synthesizer and has nothing to do with the year zero. Just press play and go about your household chores without watching. Merry Christmas

  • When I was a little boy, my dad always played this album, regardless of the time of year. I used to think he actually made this music. It turns out that my great Uncle went to college with Chip Davis, the main practicioner of Manheim Steamroller. They still get together from time to time for huge parties Chip throws.

  • yay came home from band after playing this song 10 times for consert and now im listing for the 11 time
