http://www.driver-coaching.com - I was alongside one of my coaching clients in an Elise Trophy race car when, approaching Paddock Hill bend at 110mph he hit the brakes and an almighty bang came from the rear. It turned out that the rear brake caliper had exploded. At first I braced myself for a big crash but he managed to take some speed off and get some turn in the car before going off, through the gravel and crashing into the barrier.

Thankfully the circuit had not scrimped on the gravel and it slowed the car down as fast as if it was braking (see braking force display). In the end we were doing about 5mph when we hit and only slight clam damage was caused.

Video is captured on a Video4 setup from Race-Technology, supplied, fitted and operated by www.driver-coaching.com. Most of my vids use the full 4-cams but for training I just use the front cam and the pedal cam.

Why not subscribe to my channel for the very best onboard videos on Youtube, over 190 videos already uploaded and new ones posted every week, from race series' and trackdays all over the world. http://www.youtube.com/maxxuk

  • if that happened to me i would jump off the car lmaooo....i would shit myself!!!

    nice save...

  • @fabricioteidy - LOL, I was just the passenger ... but often that is worse as there is definitely NOTHING you can do. It's just a part of the job I do though, when you spend about 200 days on the track each year you are bound to have the odd incident.

  • what on earth causes a caliper to explode? Fatigue?

  • @Legotruck82 - I think it was a bolt that sheared and then the caliper just went bang, we never did find it as I recall.

  • AT 0:30 HE IS SUPPOSE TO RELEASE THE BRAKE AND TRY TO STEER and 100MPH is not that fast which means its just a beginner.

  • @Vucijak86 - At least he is on a race track and not just playin on the public road ... and when you're brakes fail at 110mph and you are looking at a solid wall (ableit rubber coated) it does get your attention, believe me.

  • @Vucijak86 the fact i dont hear a down change on the video. the revs just die off.

  • Nice save

  • @gozney1987 AND WHAT REALLY MAKES YOU BELIEVE THAT I AM NOT? but the problem is some people you just CANT TEACH some things, either they are not talented or intelligent egnough

  • id have at least tried to go down a gear, use engine braking to help.

thing is its easy to judge in foresight but at the time i probably would have just ended up the same way.

  • @Vucijak86 why arent you the instructor then? if you so clever?

  • @monstermiataman To be honest, no I haven't. I try to stay out of Korea.

    Cool video. Good gravel.

  • has anyone else but me noticed that most kias have the brakes that are so touchy the if you barely touch them it feels like your gonna fly through the windsheild

  • ive had "oh shit!" moments with the brakes in my car, in fact it happens enough to where im convinced my brakes are trying to kill me. never happened at 110mph or id be dead for sure. nice vid
