Thanks to mediation by the Cuban Catholic Church and the Spanish government, The Castro government agreed to release 52 dissidents who had been in prison because of their views since the Black Spring. Their forced exile was the condition for their release. A total of 13 of the 19 independent journalists still held since 2003 left Cuba for Spain in July and August 2010. They included photographer Omar Rodríguez Saludes, who was the journalist to get the longest sentence in 2003.
