The American health care system affects people of all ages, from conception to death, beginning with infant mortality and ending with exorbitant costs to the elderly population.
While infant mortality has declined over the last couple of years, it is still too high. The United States dropped from 9.9 infant -deaths per 1,000 live births and ranks 24th, internationally behind such countries as Japan, Finland and Sweden. Each reported six or fewer deaths per 1,000 live births annually. Pregnant women often receive no prenatal care and they often deliver sick or physical/mentally handicapped babies. Children born to these mothers often are unable to get immunization; many die of diseases once thought to be eradicated.
The cost of health care has increased for all groups since 1965 when Medicare legislation was first introduced. The elderly pay more of their income for health care cost than any other group. In 1 965 senior citizens paid 10.6 percent of their income for health care compared to 17.1 percent in 1992. On the average elderly people pay $3,305 annually for co-payments, deductibles, premiums on supplementary insurance, Medicare Part B, and out-of pocket costs such as prescription drugs.
