Join Rony Robinson as we journey back in time to a bygone era, where Fargate was a busy main road and a ticket to the cinema cost two shillings and sixpence. Back in 1960, trams in Sheffield were about to be withdrawn, and replaced with the motor bus.

These 4 films, made by the film-makers of Sheffield Transport Department, show not just the last months of the trams, but a very different Sheffield. Just looking at these films illustrates how much the city of Sheffield - and life itself - has changed since these classic and much-loved trams were scrapped.

To commemorate 50 years since the scrapping of the original trams, these 4 films have been re-discovered and thanks to painstaking digital restoration work, everyone can travel back in time to a Sheffield where the tram took you everywhere in the city and became part of our lives.

This is how I rember Sheffield as a lad . It certainly had changed when I got back from the fareast. Great to see it as it was. Thanks.

I reckon the Sheffield double-deckers were among the handsomest trams that ever ran in Britain. I was lucky enough to get a few rides in the last year, 1960. Unforgettable! Many thanks for posting.

What year was this? At least for the last 16 years Sheffield has had trams again. Lets hope the stupidity of ripping up the tracks is never repeated.
