*update* As this is attracting a rapidly growing amount views, may I just say this recording is intended for avid listeners of shortwave radio. It's not to promote any disaster movie or other such silliness. It's not interference - it's not static - it's not a plasma television (I'm not sure who the hell buys such TVs these days) it's just what we call an 'oddity' that so far has no legitimate explanation until someone records the same thing. All other cooky explanations welcomed.

Yes, I've called this spine chilling. As I was recording this, it began to pitch up by itself at around 1:16.

It did send a chill down my spine... things don't usually change their pitch once they're being broadcasted, so I would dare say it's not a data transmission.

I've never heard this before, and it's another area of the band where I don't usually hear much activity.

Received in upper side band.

My only other guess would be some sort of radar, but no idea, I just know I can't listen to it in the dark...

  • That sounds very nice! I like that sound, good catch! I do have an old Kenwood KR-2200 receiver (mostly for an old record player, sometimes also for AM noise listening), but seeing machines like yours that are digital and receiving sounds like this makes me very curious, I'd like to get one too :)

  • @poolryhm Just posted a new video discussing radios, more than welcome to check it out :)

  • I need to get me a ham radio...

  • @MattExzy Thanks bro, great to see you active again ;D Buy yourself some Monster and Coffee and stay up really late to get some good catches ;D My best bet is that you switch to upper-side band and go around this area of the dial and if you find anything new or any dead signals write the frequency down and check them out later to see if there's any activity. I'm really getting into DX'ing now and I'm definitely going to check out your video about radios, you really care about viewers.

  • @MattExzy Yes, by all means keep it on. As well as the birdie that recording also has sounds from Space (I won't say any more on that subject, I will let people find it themselves). As for the birdie, oscillator drift varies so you may not find it on the same frequency. When conditions are quiet, search the bands for weak carriers. Disconnect the antenna (or if you have an antenna tuner slightly detune the tuner) and if the carrier is still there then that's a birdie (or harmonic). Have fun :-)

  • @GmodRandomCollection Hey dude, definitely good for beginners. I just made a video with the Tecsun PL-600 discussing its features. You and a lot of other people are wondering about what radios to use, you might find it helpful. Cheers!

  • @vk2fh VK2FH, I'm sure your explanation is the correct one and I wouldn't argue it. I haven't been able to reproduce this sound since. But given the popularity of the video, and if we want to attract new people to the hobby, perhaps it's best to let people's imaginations run a little crazy.

  • @vk2fh if this was a movie, you are the old-timer radio guy who knows everything there is to know about the air and doesn't believe a word of it ("it's just a birdie! damn kids, we used to hear three of these before breakfast and think nothing of it!") but then your character dies first and the audience is like "holy shit! the radio expert was wrong!" and they freak out cos they know that this means all bets are off.

  • Crap! You picked up my sub-space signal with the Enterprise...

DATA! See if you can clean that up!...

  • Sounds like a sped-up Aphex Twin tune
