  • @sixfootpigeon There is only one IPA, but there are several phonetic transcription systems for English languages, like DJ (Daniel Jones), KK (Kenyon and Knott) and AHD (American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language) Based on your phonetic transcription of the sentence "This is rather different to the IPA that I learned", what you learned is DJ system, which is not the real IPA but a variant of IPA that is designed for English learners (esp. British English learners).

  • /ðɪs ɪz rɑ:ðə dɪfrənt tu: ðə aɪ pi: eɪ ðæt aɪ lɜ:nd/
