I'll correct this comment:

This means that if they add the extra second I will die one second sooner. Obviously, I will live just as long as I would without the second but according to the clock it would look like I died one second earlier. .

Just get rid of it. It's not going to cause any issues down the line. Hell, we should all use UTC time anyway so we're all on the same page. What does it matter if way down the road people are waking up at 0300? Just keep the time keeping consistent and adjust your schedule based on maintaining a diurnal schedule. Any change will be so gradual no one will notice.

Speaking of consistency, that reminds me that we Americans should probably just switch over to the superior metric system.
