The purpose of this course is to explore some of the diverse cultures of Latin America as they are portrayed in the poetry and fiction of the six Nobel Prize-winning authors from the region: Pablo Neruda (Chile), Gabriela Mistral (Chile), Octavio Paz (Mexico), Gabriel García Márquez (Colombia), Miguel Angel Asturias (Guatemala), and Mario Vargas Llosa (Peru). By discussing two novels (García Márquez, Vargas Llosa), short stories (Asturias, Vargas Llosa), and several poems (Paz, Mistral, Neruda), students will consider the various representations of race, nationality, and cultural identity found in these texts.
