I videoed this in the town of Kosiv, state of Ivano-Frankivsk in western Ukraine, in the summer of 2004. It was part of the annual Ivana Kupala (Summer Solstice, or Feast of St. John the Baptist) celebrations. There was a small Hutsul folk festival, and also that weekend was the Sheshory Music Festival in a field in nearby Sheshory.
This band can be found at the Arkan restaurant in Sheshory in the summertime--or at least, they were the house band, if not anymore. . .

cool videos. this tune reminds me a lot of a klzemer tune that is usually called a "Sirba" but sounds almost exactly like this one. I wonder if they have a common origin.
