I'm an Obama fan, and I think that Hillary's campaign did more damage to McCain than to Obama. At the time, McCain was looking for a way to appeal to his conservative base, many of whom hate him. A clear opponent would have provided just the distraction he needed to champion conservative values while remaining separate from Bush. It also kept the media more focused on the Democratic primaries, and it demonstrated to her supporters that Democrats to fight all the way to the end.
