Assuming Ayers is speaking of Black Americans -African people were imported during the colonial days through the triangular trade. They helped America gain its existence and prosper, obviously at a cost, their freedom. But they are rooted in America, as some of the earliest immigrants.

Look into their faces, what are they thinking? Black people can never forget what are people went through in slavery, we have to represent them from the grave because a great injustice was perpetrated on them and us today. I carry photos of are ancestors in slavery from the Library of Congress in my cellphone and I look at them often to remind me of the past and what must be done for Black people to have a future in the west.
