Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901)
Non t'accostare all'urna (Do not approach the urn), for voice and piano (1838)
Text by Jacopo Vittorelli (1749-1835)

Non t'accostare all'urna
Che il cener mio rinserra;
Questa pietosa terra
È sacra al mio dolor.

Odio gli affanni tuoi,
Ricuso i tuoi giacinti;
Che giovano agli estinti
Due lacrime o due fior?

Empia! Empia! dovevi allora
Porgermi un fil d'aita
Quando traea la vita
Nell'ansia e nei sospir.

A che d'inutil pianto
Assordi la foresta?
Rispetta un'ombra mesta
E lasciala dormir.

  • @aidavdbrake I'm with the fans who love Spanos. I'm a classically trained singer who happens to have an excellent ear. Mr. Spanos has a beautiful voice, wonderful technique, brilliant interpretation, and perfect phrasing.

  • This really is very beautiful. The technique, breath control, and phrasing are all so perfect. This man really is an artist. I do hope that he will do a tour sometime soon so that all of us in North /america will have the chance to hear him live. It really amazes me that Spanos isn't better known than he is. This is a voice that should be heard all over the world.

  • Dramatic from the first moment onwards, this performance is first class, in my opinion. Perfectly nuanced and wonderfully presented. What a master Nicholas Spanos is - a totally convincing piece of music :) Thank you.

  • woooooooooooooooooooooooooooow.... that felling... the fiatto.. awesome...

  • Well done! I must say that I didn't expect a countertenor to sing this kind of music, but he does really great: he has a fantastic legato and he renders all the pathos and drama that should be in this miniature-opera/monologue. A discovery!!

  • @Monrealese I couldn't agree more with you! Only BEAUTY matters! Every true artists is UNIQUE! If more "sober" manner of interpretation worked for Bruson and Dimitrova, why all the others should present it "sober" too?! Why not add more drama?! Spanos really expresses EVERY WORD and changes both his voice and facial expression according to the TEXT!

  • Why are countertenors expanding theire repertoire and not stick to theire own?

    Because we can :) Hearing this piece performed by a "traditional" voice is stunnig, hearing it from a CT as Spanos is amazing! It can be the world upside-down to some, but why not look at it from that angle? Anything is possible. If you have a beautifull, pure voice and the musicallity to tackle any genre you are capable of, like Spanos, sing whatever you want. There are always people who appreciate the beauty.

  • @mradaChris It's exactly what I meant that Spanos shows all the emotions according to the text and doesn't stand still. He shows with his hand "this sad, pitiful soil". Why not? He shows on his face "I hate". Why not?! Why should he sing this song just making pretty sounds like a bird chirping?! So, I don't understand that mrOrgan26's statement that this piece should be sung in a more sober manner without all this unnecessary drama as I guess according to him Spanos shows. I just disagree!

  • @serenaluce Good! It is about time! He is also on facebook too. He has a following there also.

  • @serenaluce I prefer to see emotion, I don't care for being stoic and standing still. So what if a person can sing a beautiful piece standing still. There are many who can. But find me a vocalist who lives the song and you have my attention. That is respectful to the music to emote it. The composers who created all of these wonderful arias weren't standing still/no emotion individuals! Far from it.

    I don't understand your last sentence.

  • @mradaChris And all his fan club knows it too which is becoming bigger and bigger:-)

  • @serenaluce Well Spanos is awesome! You and I both know that! :-)
