Claude Chabrol is dead, 1930-2010. A note on Chabrol. I wouldn't even know where to start writing an obituary for Claude Chabrol, the French nouvelle vague master who passed away yesterday at the age of 80. His filmography is so vast — spanning 52 years and 54 features, many of which I have yet to see — and his influence so extensive that formal tributes are best left to those more learned than I.

Claude Chabrol: "Stupidity is infinitely more fascinating that intelligence." "Intelligence has its limits while stupidity has none. To observe a profoundly stupid individual can be very enriching, and that's why we should never feel contempt for them."

Some of his films were more popular than others. To which he said: "You have to accept the fact that sometimes you are the pigeon, and sometimes you are the statue."

"I like using the thriller genre because when people go see a thriller — unless it's really worthless — they never say, 'We've wasted our time,' " he said. "It's a good way to make people feel like going and not complain too much. Because you don't make a film to express your ideas. You make a film to distract people, to interest them, perhaps to make them think, perhaps to help them be a little less naïve, a little better than they were."

THE FILM
The Bridesmaid ( Claude Chabrol 2004)
A middle class family in Loire, where things seem just a tad off kilter. Philippe dotes on his mother, who has raised his two sisters and him. Gérard, a wealthy man just divorced, is paying attention to her, then drops her. Philippe is actually pleased, and retrieves from Gérard's garden a stone head - of the goddess Flora - that his mother had given Gérard. At the wedding of one of his sisters, Philippe meets Senta, a quirky and moody young woman: they fall quickly in love, despite her odd behaviors and Philippe's general good sense. Senta announces a plan for them to prove their love to each other; it involves poetry, tree planting, and murder. What will Philippe do?
