Of course he knows for what his friends died, just at the moment coz he's in such a grief and despair. Who can say he believes in any win in front of so many deaths of his mates ?

There was nothing that came of their sacrifice, he sees it as a pointless waste of life. He knew what they wanted to achieve.

i think now that practically everyone he loved and knew died in one fell swoop, AND they lost anyway, he's seriously doubting that the revolution is worth it. seeing as all it's done is cause him pain and grief. anyways, that's just my opinion.
