Great Movie Endings: North by Northwest Mt Rushmore

Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint in North By Northwest. Mt Rushmore is the backdrop for one of the most intense endings to any movie. Alfred Hitchcock was a genius.

Sorry but the most intense ending of any movie is in On the Waterfront.

Personally, I find that Hitchcock often rushed the endings. From the climax, less than a minute of movie remains. The second Man Who Knew Too Much, Vertigo, and this film are prime examples of this.

A lot of people don't know this, but the final shot is supposed to represent a penis entering a vagina (train entering tunnel). Hitchcock movies had a tendency to be sexually-suggestive due to the MPAA's restrictions regarding sex at the time. That's one thing I've always admired about the great director!

Well duh, consider what Cary Grant (Thornhill) and Eva Marie Saint (Kendall) are about to do before entering the tunnel.

Beale64:

Really? People don't know that? I would have thought it was patently obvious...

That's why when he later made Frenzy, explicit scenes were shown rather than implied.

Then you're a moron------it's one of the best moments in film history.

Jesus, that's like saying, "Love that 1812 Overture - - but hated those cannons."
