This simple cake recipe shows how to make a chocolate sponge cake. More details on this sponge cake recipe can be found at http://www.cookeryskills.com/html/chocolate_cake.html.

This uses chocolate buttercream (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbjKaTgU4I4 for more information).

The ingredients for make a chocolate sponge cake for two 7 inch sponge tins are as follows:

180g soft margarine / butter
180g caster sugar
3 eggs (large)
155g self-raising flour
25g cocoa powder
Chocolate and hazelnut buttercream

130g flaked almonds (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I--R-yYaI1w)
Icing sugar for dusting

  • Hi - thanks for the question. Yes - removing the cocoa powder would give a plain sponge cake. There is a video and recipe for a Victoria Sponge Cake on the cookeryskills YouTube channel, which would be worth a look!

The ingredients are; 180g soft margarine, 180g caster sugar, 3 large eggs, 155g self-raising flour, 25g cocoa powder, chcolate and hazelnut buttercream, 100g chocolate shavings, 130g flaked almonds and icing sugar for dusting.
