My own personal introduction to opera was a compilation album of Maria Callas. My entire family while I was growing up were opera aficionados so I resisted it a bit. Certainly my peers made that easier too. (I was born '84) But yeah, anything Maria Callas would make one love opera– just by her sheer virtuosity. After that, Mozart: Don Giovanni or Die Zauberflöte. But I followed my family's fanaticism really after hearing Rossini. So, best place to start, Rossini! (L'Italiana in aligeri)

The best opera for young people to start out with? That's easy. Pagliacci! Short, very excellent opera! I'm 24. Pagliacci was my first!

I'm only 13, and I admit, you ARE my favorite soprano. I've seen 7 operas so far and you've been in 2 of them. L'Eliser D'Amore, and Don Pasquale, which i actually saw last night. when act 1 scene 2 came and i saw u, i wanted to cry. i adore u, u are funny, and u have a great voice. ymnetsa! bravo

There is an easy test - Callas' 53 Tosca under de Sabata - if someone resists this he is either not ready for Opera and he ll never be ready for it.
Also Verdi's Traviata (melody so strong that you get infected by it)
Anna's suggestions are great! I started listening to opera when i was 14years old. I am now 16years old, and i totally agree with Anna here. In my opinion, the young people of today do not see opera for its true musical beauty(this is certainly the case in Scotland where I live)
To be honest with you all, I don't see how people can honestly watch Netrebko's videos and not just fall in love with her voice. I certainly did!
God bless! Viva Anna Netrebko!
