Perhaps a better bit to judge him on would be the riff and the change into the bridge. Strumming works well on many tunes, it's the transition between sections where you get a sense of whether it's working or not.

He's playing it a bit too quick, I was in a band in the 80's and we covered a bunch of old REM, they're surprisingly tough, so good job taking on a tough but fantastic REM song.
