Some movies stand the rest of time better than others. This isn't one of them. It's a film of its time and before. Human emotion hasn't changed so much, but it has found a different focus and although this could be classed a chick flick, it isn't.
It's practically Victorian in it's moral tone and theme of redemption through love and faith. Also very masculine.
Therefore. I believe for a modern audience the plot of this move, would seem absurd, almost childishly naive.
You know unlike movies of the current age, this one reflects class. I do not understand why I have to read ugly comments throughout U Tube on works such as this. Would it not be best if you dislike the video just to keep it to yourself rather than to spoil it for those who appreciate the work. I know people who practice the Magnificent Obsession in their daily lives. Would we not be better off if we all participated? Would we also not be better of with respectful comments?
This movie is a real howler and a hoot! It could only be made in 1954 and no other year. But on the plus side it is beautiful to look at, I think it would play better as a silent movie.

Douglas Sirk is great, but I don't understand the appeal of Jane Wyman. I can't believe she's only 37 in this film.

@johnyzero2000 You're a tasteless, fucking cretin to stupid to "get" the Sirk aesthetic. Eat shit and die.

Another Douglas Sirk masterpiece. With another brilliant Frank Skinner score.
