When Eva Cassidy was 21 yrs old in 1984, one of her friend bought a 4 track recorder and mixer and allowed Eva to do a 3 part female background harmony with a lead. She used her own voices for all 4 parts and this was how she recorded this version of The Rose. This is part of the Bette Midler song "The Rose" by Eva Cassidy. All the background voices in bracket are Eva's and, of course, the lead voice is also Eva's. What you are hearing is the 2nd verse of The Rose (repeated). Unfortunately, I don't have the complete song by Eva.

The Rose by Eva Cassidy

It's the heart afraid of breaking, (it's the heart) that never learns to dance (it's the heart)
And it's the dream (it's the dream) afraid of waking (never, never)
That never takes the chance
It's the one who won't be taken, who cannot seem to give
Oh when the soul (it's the soul) afraid of dying(afraid of dying), that never, never learns to live.
(repeats)

The pictures in the video were taken of Eva touching part of a mural she painted at a school. The other picture is of Eva with her older sister, Anette. Hope you enjoy the video and Eva's interpretation of The Rose as much as I do!

  • On my route to oldies Eva Cassidy is a station to stop for a while to have a warmish feeling. Eva's powerful and emotional voice is like water to ease your thirst.

  • Happy Birthday Eva! Feb 2nd.

  • Damn... such a loss...

  • Eva Cassidy sang what she wanted to, and therefore never achieved fame until her young death from cancer. She was known and appreciated by many, however.. I'm honored to hear her now. She chose her own music/songs.

  • If I were ever to be stranded on a desert island I would be somewhat consoled by having with me even one song from Eva.The world is a lesser place without her. We are lucky to have the legacy of her music.

Thank-you U TUBE and thank you Joner888 so much for this.

  • I have loved Eva Cassidy since I first heard her-what a great talent!!She left us too soon.

  • A great talent and so versatile!

  • I love this, where can I get the full song??

  • absolutely beautiful as with all her music..
