John Howard was prime minister of Australia from 1996 to 2007. When he delivered this speech, Stephen Harper was leader of the opposition coalition. He became prime minister in 2006.
Australia and Canada are both commonwealth countries. Famously, Harper asked the queen's personal representative in Canada to prorogue (suspend) parliament in 2008, to avoid a vote of no-confidence. It was the first time in Canadian history a prime minister had made such a request. The queen obliged.
In 1975, the queen's governor-general of Australia suspended the entire government, removing even the prime minister from office. Parliament did not meet again until a new election had been held. It was the most significant constitutional crisis in Australian history.
I wonder if ambitious politicians in both countries learned any lessons from these two incidents about how to advance in the commonwealth system of government? What would those lessons be? Please consider leaving comments.
