The Nagoshi Harae, or "Summer Purification Rites," is one of Japan's oldest religious festivals, dating back to the eighth century.
Worshippers pray to deities to purge them of the impurities they have gathered in the first half of the year. The ritual takes the form of stepping through a chinowa, which is a large reed hoop, holding a doll that they get from the shrine.
This is said to protect them from ill luck and sickness.
It is also a custom to eat minazuki, a soft rice cake topped with sweet beans for protection against misfortune. Try one, they taste good and may even bring you good luck, too.
