You might have been following the story already but may not have seen these incredible pictures. 14-month-old Li Jingchao is recovering in hospital after doctors had performed a miracle - removing a chopstick that had accidentally poked up through his nose and entered his brain.
Li was playing with chopsticks while his mother was in the kitchen washing dishes, when he fell and began crying. She rushed to his side immediately and this was the sight that greeted her.
Because local hospitals did not have the technology, Li's parents travelled 10 hours by car to Beijing where an expert surgeon was ready to operate. Staff at the hospital to this video. An x-ray of the boy's head showed how far the chopstick had entered his brain area.
A team of surgeons slowly pulled the chopstick from the child's nose, and were prepared to operate if there were complications. They were obviously concerned the removal of the chopstick, lodged 4 millimeters into Li's brain, would cause internal haemorrhaging once removed.
"We were fully prepared to bear the worst results when we started the surgery. When we were pulling out the chopstick bit by bit from the child's nose we found that blood slowly running from his nose instead of spraying on a large scale,"
Due to the skill of the surgeon, this nightmare scenario never happens.
"We were fully prepared for the worst result. We were prepared to cut open his head immediately to stop the bleeding from his brain if blood spurted from his nose just when the chopstick was pulled out. But the surgeon's skill was fully realised."
"Doctor Sun Wei, an expert on neurosurgery, has successfully treated four cases like this. He has dealt with chopsticks stuck into a person's eyes, stuck into a chin and stuck into a forehead. These were all accidents. The parents travelled with the child for 10 hours by train to come to this hospital because the surgeon Sun Wei is famous for his skill in handling this kind of surgery."
Li is now recovering in hospital and, barring complications, should be able to leave in about a week.
It's a good thing the child's parents had the presence of mind not to try to remove the chopstick themselves.
