Film can do it better and cheaper at this resolution. 12"x12" black and white film can capture resolution as good as 2 gigapixels.

When I have a gigapixel camera, I will take a picture of my backyard and edit the image to see every insects interaction with the natural world, be able to see a worm dig into the dirt for protection, see a baby bird clamoring out for its mother, see whispy dust blow against the grass tips. I WILL BLOW YOUR MIND.

This is an exciting advance. The first DSLR in 1991 had only 1.3 megapixels, cost $13,000 and was big and cumbersome, today a small point and shoot like the Sony RX-100 has 20 megapixels, a fast Carl Zeiss lens and can fit into my pocket for only $600. In 20 years it is possible that we will have gigapixel DSLRs coming to market.
