  • Superb performance, thorough, intelligent and full of excitement!

That's why Alfred Brendel is considered one of the greatest pianists of the twentieth century. Despite his recent retirement from the stage, for which we have had the opportunity to hear all his work record and read his books, one can only thank him for his great contribution to world music and the arts.

    Alfred Brendel Thanks ...!!

  • I loved the Tom and Jerry version of this.

  • @lotus49a Thanks for showing that youtube comment threads can be used for enjoyable and intelligent conversation :) Much appreciated (also, it led me to listen to this again, and it was the perfect antidote to a dull wintry day).

  • @skuzinsk

Which is absolutely typical of Brendel, who is one of my all time favourite pianists. In addition to being a superb musician with an unerring feel for the music, he is also a man of great intelligence and musical wisdom.

I have heard a lot of renditions of this piece and none approaches Brendel's interpretation. I wish I could have heard Liszt himself play it though.

  • Why are people comparing Lang Lang with Brendel? Brendel's rendition is as good as it can be, he's a real virtuoso. LL looks like a mime, what you hear is a mess... not the original Liszt not even the Horowitz arrangement. IMO the one to compare is Jung Lin's version that's astonishing.

  • This is such a thoughtful performance. He doesn't approach it in the mindset of "now I will show you my virtuosity" (ahem, lang lang and....well, almost everyone). You can tell he's listening to what he's playing as a musician, not just a technician.

  • @xdestroyx92 yah, I just listened to lang lang---NO COMPARISON. lang lang is self-indulgent, Brendel indulges the music. inspired me to tears

  • I just heard this for the first time. There is nothing like it on earth. Grandiose.

    Alfred Brendel Merci ...!!

  • @barker747 if you're sure, we're sure
