I'm still highly unsettled after the passing of the late-great philosopher-king poet-president former dissident author rocker of the Czech Republic Former Czechoslovakia, Vaclav Havel | Václav Havel, "Mister Czech."

Prague's popular American expat pundit, Erik Best, of the city's The Final World and The Fleet Sheet, was quick to point out how the diminutive giant Havel likely represented "Brand Czech" for most Czechs (UPDATE: Here's the link: https://twitter.com/#!/ErikBest/status/148669248829530113).

In the wake of the former dissident's passing, who is there to replace him? Havel was Mr. Nice Guy, and a quick survey of the Czech domestic scene doesn't reveal a ready replacement anytime soon.

So can you blame young Czechs for their continued exodus to places of greater opportunity? Or for the futility they often feel as active members of their own domestic political scene when the prominent players pulling the levers of Czech power still sidle up to Russian energy and big business interests and agendas?

While Havel was still alive, there was a glimmer of hope. Now that he's gone, what's it going to be?

This isn't your grandfather's Czechoslovakia, that's for sure...

And thanks again for watching!

  • Well put, thank you, I too feel very sad in my heart and concerned about the passing of a giant in my former country of origin...

He was not perfect, but under the circumstances, he definitely tried the hardest to "show up" for the job that was pushed upon him.

His death is a loss to humanity! May we all be inspired by humans like him.

In his writings you'll discover that we've lost: a beautiful human being, similar to Jack Layton here in Canada: a kind, strong leader, a father!

  • @katnip2u The biggest concern for the Czech Republic now is finding someone who can ideally replace Havel -- to produce that same international "feelgood." Brand Czech has taken such a beating in Europe.

But don't let me butcher Erik's words, because he said it best...link in the description (UPDATE).

  • hmm nice words man

  • @FeroMet Thank you. He was very important to me, as he was to many.

  • Adam... I wish you a beautiful Christmas

  • i don`t agree with your opinion at all,he as a person have zero influence on soviet empire ,USSR goes bankrupt and loses control over people

True heroes are those whose names were forgotten, those beat down to death by police and military regime.

  • He is the only president/politician I am proud of.

  • Thank you for your speech. I just hope Czech people realize the power of the ideals he represented and that we won´t get lost without him in this huge world.

  • very true...unfortunately...

But I was at Václavské náměstí in Prague and I saw thousands candles for Václav Havel and hundred of very sad people....And I think - here in Czech Republic is still some hope. I don´t want to live in "republic of Václav Klaus"...I believe that here is a big part of nation which also doesn´t want...

thank you very much for this video...and sorry for my english

btw: "Truth and love must prevail over lies and hate"
