This is a scrolling sign configured to instantly show when someone checks into a particular venue on foursquare. I made this to experiment with the foursquare push API but I'm still thinking up ideas for how else I can use checkins. I would love to hear your ideas and feedback!

The code for this project is very rough at this point and could use a lot of optimization. Arduino code: http://pastebin.com/zhqGDHn8 PHP code: http://pastebin.com/J1bndmx0 (you must put the PHP file on an SSL server and point the foursquare push API at it)

  • where do you get the sign?

  • @daafies2 They're pretty cheap on ebay because it's old tech that many large companies are doing away with.

  • Great Project! So when you press 'checkin', its sends your location to your php server, and then your php server connects to your Arduino, its right?

  • @xanokothe Well, Foursquare is actually monitoring if anyone checks into a particular venue (i.e. my apartment) and then sends an alert when they do.

  • Source code? Would love to see how you set your server to accept the SSL connection.

  • @bekathwia My webhost, Site5, has a shared SSL certificate on all their shared servers. I put the PHP files there and give the foursquare push API the address of the domain on the SSL cert, worked like a charm. Just posted links to the code in the description, by the way.

  • Matt, what do you think about SOPA? make a vid

  • @op4l4 Crypto on the Arduino is the most EVIL thing ever! Nothing in the world is more evil than AES on an 8-bit Microprocessor.

  • You are not only cute, but smart too! ;)

  • Another great example of how Arduino connects virtual and real worlds together. Great job!

  • @topherquoter I just put a link to the source code in the description. It's still very sloppy, but it works.

  • Very cool! I should really get one of those! :)

  • Really enjoy your videos, keep it up!
