This beautiful red vintage diesel DJ Locomotive belong to the Taeiri Gorge Railway was originally supplied to New Zealand Railways with a Caterpillar Motor in the 60s. Sorry the camera's shaking a bit-it was very ccccold

The DJ class started service in a pale pink. However they were repainted in what I believe to be referred to as Midland Red. This DJ was painted in a different place to the DE so not left over paint but I believe a close as possible match. Personally I love this loco painted in this colour so well done Pullisto

DJ 1240, the most beautifull DJ on TGRs roster. Thanks to the men who helped that this loco could run in it´s original livery.

I heared from Paul Jeffery, that someone didn´t like this loco and trys not to use it. I think a railway lives from it´s heritage, and even the DB here in Germany has some locos in it´s original livery. I was lucky to see a class 290 (heavy B-B diesel hydraulic shunter) in it´s as delivered red livery only a few weeks ago when they served our steel yard.

@wheel5800 Didnt these D J'S start out red and basically fade to the pink,I lived on the main north line at Bryndwr and spent many a time on the footbridge at the end of Hawthorne street watching everything go past . Cant recall seeing D J'S in a new pink livery .Only old ones that hadnt been cleaned more so the case ! Even D G 's went to a faded red .Some dark and some light red.

Hadn't seen this reply till now. Yes, it was Midland Red, applied to about 6 members of the fleet, 1204, 1207,(possibly 1209) 1213, 1230, 1254 and 1256, originally painted for Southerner, then they decided to make the matching Southerner blue. Alas, 1240 has now been given squared windows and painted back to blue and grey, as 3424 again, with small black numerals bottom of cab to replace the chrome plates. The classy red livery won an award for creativity with the world acclaimed WETA workshops.

Is that the correct red for a DJ? or left over paint from the DI?

Yes, with my travels over the globe, I noticed a number of railway companies mingling heritage liveries on some of their locos, I could name at least five in UK, and remember a couple of locos on the DB, Trans metro in Wellington have a heritage liveried DM unit, and in Australia there are one of two of the V-Line GM 'cab' diesels in Melbourne (same style as F units) in old VR livery, very nice, a head turner. They dont make liveries like they used to.
