Here we see the genius in the film's writing. The villain is willing to cheat to get what he wants, it is his definition of living dangerously. He will only live dangerously unless he knows that he can win. Not the hero, he knows full well that he is going to lose and that he is perfectly willing to take that certain risk because "He too likes to live dangerously", he does not care for winning and will go against the odds regardless of whether he will win. Truly a classic masterpiece.
