  • The best way to learn this technique is to actually practice. This video is an excellent showcase of the technique of pro skiers. Imitation is one of the best ways to learn, a video can only take you so far. Reality is the best teacher.

  • The best way to learn we have found is repetition and mimicry: ski right behind a expert at a good pace, mimic and imprint. Have them give advice while moving. The biggest lschooling I received free of charge was from my competitors on the World Cup during a race.

  • Nice video, thanks for posting!

I've been skate skiing for quite a long time, however one thing I never noticed till seeing this video was how much the top skiers seem to "align" their front ski in the direction of motion, prior to planting that ski.

My question to the expert skiers out there:

What would be an optimal angle with which to plant the front ski with respect to the direction of motion?

    assume: relatively flat surface

0 degrees = direction of motion.

  • The ski angle becomes more parallel to 0 degrees as speed increases, conversely increasingly perpendicular at slower speeds, such as in high resistance terrain.

The lead skier at 3:16 onwards in the red alpina boots is pointing his forward ski nearly to 0 before realigning prior to snow contact to match his glide angle/speed.

I'm no t an expert but my instructors have taught me to look for this.

  • @slide4180 Beautiful, I'm Scandinavian :D. But the practice thing is true.

  • Those guys are booking it.

  • @wildblue2 I agree that practice is essential to master a technique. Still, understanding the physics involved in the body´s movement is of great advantage when you try to figure out what is it that you do that does (or does not) work. Videos likes these help me immensely to be able to see every second of a prof´s performance. BTW: a ski angle cannot become "parallel" to anything. What you mean is that the ski angle simply becomes 0 degrees.

  • Beautiful. Makes me want to be Scandinavian!

  • Btw, you guys spelled "pole" wrong.
