The 3,300 foot long Big Savage Tunnel was built in 1911-12 and is today part of the Great Allegheny Passage Trail, running from McKeesport, PA, to Cumberland, MD. It was restored at a cost of $12 million and opened to cyclist traffic in 2003.

On June 10, 2009, we rode through the tunnel as we rode our last day on the GAP Trail, heading towards Cumberland. You can read about our ride at:

  • That would have been quite a long walk! It is definitely the longest tunnel I have cycled through but it was not unpleasant since it was well-lit and the road surface was smooth.

  • Thank You! I get back to Meyersdale a few times a year but haven't been throught the tunnel. Now I have! As a young teen we dared each other to walk it. Each time we attempted it, a train came from the Frostburg side. We chickened out. Memories!
