I'm white. I don't think gentrification is because white people move to the area. I think it is because white people move in and do not support local businesses or culture. I personally live in Echo Park. I shop at the local businesses and not the hipster overpriced stuff. If I want to feel fancy, I hang out in Weho.

Echo Park SUCKS. On one hand, you have these ridiculous, silly "hipster/scenster" assholes. The skinny jeans, the self importance, the "look at me Im hip" posing. Many living off of mom and dad still.

THEN you have the Mexicans. Trash and vandalism. Filth everywhere. Poor and uneducated illegal aliens. The gang banger scum who should be aloud to live.

Now they are all living side by side. In the end, the Mexicans will win out. People are already leaving Echo Park because of the crime.

@mildjeffrey we get kicked out of Echo park for what? to make room for another person who can afford the rent? if the government would say "let build some projects next to beverly hills" what do you think those citizens will do? complain right? exactly so dont give yourself excuses... you will never truly feel how we feel because we are in two different worlds... dont say we are the same... if a white person grew up with me i would consider him or her the same because of the experiences..

@mildjeffrey our parents come from other countries... and i'm not trying to assume but your parents were probably born here..so they know how to navigate the U.S laws and its treasures... we on the other hand have to learn by doing and failiing... we are first generation u.s born citizens trying to fit in a world that continues to put a clamp on our hard work...

@mildjeffrey Our gangs are tired of seeing everyone around echo park but its because we have never seen anything like this... we never saw people walking their dogs at 12am in the park... we would get jacked if we did that... our reaction is a normal one... our reaction is necessary so i wont call it racism.. i call it a reaction... a reaction to this capitalistic state of mind...

@mildjeffreyThousands and thousands of families were misplaced because of high rent... most people that move in to echo park have some kind of support from back "home" so they are able to move around effortlessly as with us we cant... we dont have anywhere else to go... this is our home.. we made it ours when no one else wanted to... now that we have something to offer everyone is jumping in...
