Yep, it's possible, I searched all of the net but nowhere did I found a good answer to my question:
How do I run Compiz with a Unichrome Pro graphic card on Ubuntu?

Well I found out how:
First you have to make sure you're using the official driver from the viaarena website (http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=2).
After that you have to download compiz of course.
Change the settings and make sure to not use fire effect and NO SPLASH SCREEN PLUGIN, the splash will crash ubuntu with this card.
Anyway, now you have to make changes in the compiz config file:
sudo gedit /usr/bin/compiz

And change this:
# Driver whitelist
WHITELIST="nvidia intel ati radeon i810"
to this:
# Driver whitelist
WHITELIST="via nvidia intel ati radeon i810"

so add via.

now startup compiz, it should work.

It's not flawless, but it works, and alot faster than on this vid, I don't have a good screen capture tool nor RAM amount lol.

  • hi, i also have a via unichrome integrated video card, with a maxim. of 64 mb.

i tried doing what you say on your description, but when i try starting compiz, my computer restarts...

i'm afraid i do not have the official via drivers, but the openchrome's drivers for via instead.

i would appreciate a lot if you could tell me where to download the official drivers (the exactly direction please), or what else could i do..

thanks a lot, i'll watch this video for responses

  • I added the URL in the description. It should say PageID=2 btw, it got cut off acidentally.

  • thanks..

i opened the url, went to the integrated graphics sections into the ubuntu linux one, and searched for the driver, but i don't know witch one should i download..

i've got an UniChrome IGP (KM400, KN400) chip

please, help me, because i can't find an answer searching the web, just like you

  • I have no idea to be honest, I did some research and found out that graphics card is quite old and was the first to be called 'Unichrome'. Maybe you should just try some of the drivers and test which one works?

  • kool chek out my 3d effects video

  • yes, i'll do so, and i'll tell you later if it worked

  • I wouldn't say 'nice', but you'll be able to get some effects like wobbly windows, desktop cube, etc.

  • Ok, I'll give it a go and see if this works for me I have a laptop I use Ubuntu on and it has a fairly good CPU and one gig of ram, but the graphics card is a Unichrome pro I hope I can get some nice desktop effects out of it.
