Crochet Tutorial #2 Rasta Tam

Abbreviations:
Hdc = Half Double Crochet
St. = Stitch
Sts = Stitches
SS= Slip Stitch
Dec = Decrease
DC = Double Crochet
() = Repeat anything within parenthesis to end of round. Marked with an asterisk *
[] = Any notes will be within brackets.

[THE LAST STITCH AT THE END OF EACH ROW WILL BE SMALLER AND HARDER TO SEE DUE TO JOINING, BUT YES THAT IS COUNTED AS THE LAST STITCH AND SHOULD BE USED IN THE CROCHET COUNT]

Rnd 1 [Using color A] make 15 dc in slip ring, pull tightly. Join color B using ss, ch 2.
[Strand color from previous row into first few stitches of next row after joining the color, cut, prior color and totally cover it.* repeat this step each time you join a different color.]

Rnd 2 [In color B.] 1 dc in the same st. 2 hdc in next st. (work 2 dc in each st.around)* Join color C using ss, ch 2.

Rnd 3 [In color C] 1 dc in same st. 1dc in next 3 sts. (1dc in next 3 sts. 2 dc in next st around)* join in same color C with ss, ch2.

Rnd 4 thru 6 [In color C] 1dc in same st. 1dc in next 4 sts. ( 1 in next 4 sts. 2 dc in next st)* Join color of your choice or color A as shown with ss, ch.2

Rnd 7 thru 11 [In color A] (1dc in next 8 sts, 2 hdc in next st. around)* join with ss, ch 2. [join with color B once you finish round 11, join with ss, ch.2] 5 rounds total. [These 5 rows make the bend part of your hat or floppy part.

Rnd 12 thru 16 [In color B] 1dc in each st. around), join with ss, ch2. Join with color C at the end of round 17. [These 5 rounds make the total depth or length of your hat, you can add more or do less as desired.]

Rnd 17 thru 22 [In color C] 1 dc in the same st, 1dc in next 6sts. 1dc dec using the next 2 sts as shown in video. (1 dc in next 6 sts, 1 dc dec in using next 2 sts around.)* Join with ss, ch.2 *read instructions for double crochet decrease = dc dec.* It took me 6 rounds to make the hat fit my head, yours may take more or less rounds.
[Dc dec = Yo, go through next st, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 1st 2 loops on the hook,
Yo go through NEXT st, pull up a loop, yo pull through 1st 2 loops on hook, yo pull through remaining 3 loops on hook.]
Join using final accent color or in the example of this video Color A, ch. 1

Rnd 23 & 24 [in color A]. 1 sc in each st. around. You can add elastic into row 24 if desired. For instructions for adding elastic please watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1CovFZJTzMY

Finish off with smaller crochet hook or needle weave end into last row of hat.Youre done!!!! Congratulations 

  • When i change colors do i cut the yarn that i finished with or do i stitch it in with the new color??

    thanks

  • @careri28 you can do it either way. But even if you strand a bit of yarn into the first row after joining its best to cut it. Cut off a tail about 4 inches long or so, that should give you the room you need.

  • can i use triple crochet stitches instead of dc, to make the tam durable in the summer?

  • @utuber618 sorry it took me so long to reply. Yes, you can modify it to suit your needs. You will see along the way if it alters the overall outcome and then decide to so something like that on every other row or so to your tastes.

  • Pinky: Your notes say that for round 2 you need to do a Double Crochet in the same stitch, then 2 Half Double Crochet in the next stitch, but the vid says to do Double crochet all the way around. Just thought I'd let you know.

  • Thank you!

  • Thank you so much for making this available! 1st of all, you are beautiful and I love your dreads. 2nd, I am a beginner who learns BEST by watching. 3rd, I really wanted to learn this style of hat because I am white and have a lot of hair that is long, fine and gets frizzy in cold dry weather. My oldest daughter is multiracial with good hair, but she uses a flat iron on it and doesn't like to get snow on it or it curls back up. This hat is perfect for both of us, and hello, rastalicious. :)

  • i love you dreadlocks

  • thanks for posting ur tutorial.. ur really great help for me..ppl like u are so nice..

  • @Richiechalupa The ripples come from using different amounts of tension on different stitches. I would say you can try using a spray bottle of water to lightly mist the hat, then sit a bit of plastic then something heavy like a book on it and let it dry overnight. It's sort of like "ironing" without causing shrinkage. I hope that helps.

  • How do you make it flat and lay down after you finish it? My mom recently made me a tam for my dreads and it has ripples and kinda sticks up at the top of my forhead

  • helpfull

  • Okay. Thank you Pinky even for your late reply. That's okay, I understand. I know you are a very busy women and it wasn't intentional. Just to conclude that I think ALL of your videos are incredible. I am one of your #1 fans. (smiles). Please, keep that positive energy coming. Peace Sis.
