FitWeight Clinic Kaiser South Sacramento 11-11-10

KCRA TV Channel 3's special coverage of Kaiser South Sacramento's Innovative Pediatric Obesity Clinic. With financial support and excellent consultation from Kaiser Permanente's Innovation & Advanced Technology Group, clinicians are using advanced technology tools to assess, monitor, and motivate their pediatric patients. Body Composition (e.g. percent body fat) pre- and post-participation in the clinic is assessed using a world-class Bod Pod chamber, and cardiovascular fitness is assessed using a step-test with continuous heart rate monitoring. Participants use calorie expenditure monitors 12 - 24 hours per day at home, either Fitbits or BodyMedia FITs, and upload their the data daily for medical staff to review. Active Video Games, such as Wii Fit, Just Dance, and Just Dance 2 are provided to encourage active screen time instead of passive TV watching. The clinic focuses on helping the children become more physically active and teaching families how to make smarter food choices. Clinic staff monitor the children's activity remotely and appropriate feedback is provided to encourage increasing levels of activity. Goal setting with appropriate awards is integrated into the program. In the first 3 months, approximately 75 children have enrolled in the 6-month program, and 15-30 more are added every month. Family response to the program, so far, has been outstanding.
