using darker shades on the inner corner of your eyes makes them look smaller, it should go darkest on the outer corner to create a sort of shadow,.

Not necessarily. I tried it the other way round and it makes the eye look bushy and messy. It also distracts from the main colour as it covers the larger part of the eye (with the pigment crescendoing out) which is not the idea of the look.
Also having black on the inner corner gives your eyes a dark edge which makes them more haunting and illustrative of strength (doing this the other way doesn't work because the eye looks too pale to work with the black .
That's just my opinion.
