There's a lot happening during playtime. Little ones are lifting, dropping, looking, pouring, bouncing, hiding, building, knocking down, and more. Children are busy when they're playing. And, more than that, they are learning. They are learning key scientific concepts, such as what sinks and floats; mathematical concepts, including how to balance blocks to build a tower; and literacy skills, such as trying out new vocabulary or storytelling skills as children "act out" different roles. Play is the true work of childhood.

And when your children play with you, they are also learning—that they are loved and important and that they are fun to be around. These social-emotional skills give them the self-esteem and self-confidence they need to continue building loving and supportive relationships all their lives.

  • Do you let them pick their own? If so, do you find any problems with that?

  • @raca722 sometimes I let them pick, but I try to mix up the groups a little so it's not always the same kids playing together as they move along to different centers. I tell you, this method really worked well for classrooms with over 20 children, and I never had any complaints from the kids as they all knew they would get to play in their favorite center at some point!

  • Yep, me too. What we do is before we institute this arrangement, we bring all the props up in front of the class and explain to the kids what's going on. Then they're not shocked. And it's funny because all the time I forget to reset it and this one little boy will without fail come up to me and in a polite way tell me I forgot to set it!

  • I cannot believe the comments. I myself am a classroom teacher and use a timer in my classroom to teach organization. I guess they didn't read the title. I wonder what they did in school when the bell rang each day. You want a loud noise how about those fire drills. I enjoyed this video. I don't think people realize what is expected of classroom teachers currently. We have to teach organization, because sadly many don't come to us that way. Keep giving tips mscharme.

  • this is like preparing kids for their jobs at the plant

  • How would you like it if someone interupted your time, come on people where's the respect for children gone? Remember to ask yourselves who are we doing this for?

    It's a learning.

  • very effective system

  • That buzzer thing would freak me out. Loud noises scare me.
