I cut down four arborvitae shrubs that were too close to the house. Digging their stumps out with a spade seemed tedious, and other options seemed too slow or expensive, so I thought of uprooting them with a car jack instead.

I dug a small trench to one side and put a board there to brace the jack against. Generally it had to be done from two different sides, and after that a stump could be easily levered out with a spade.

Besides being quick, and free, I think this technique is pretty fun!

  • this is the number 1 method in my opinion for removing tree stumps!! I've tried all sorts of lever bars etc, but if you can get a jack under the stump it'll rip it clean out of the ground
