"Spreading democracy in the Middle East is a bad idea."

Moderator: Robert Siegel
Speaking for the motion: Flynt Leverett, Dimitri Simes and Shibley Telhami
Speaking against the motion: Liz Cheney, Danielle Pletka and Natan Sharansky

IQ2US marks the launch of Oxford-style debating -- one motion, one moderator, three advocates for the motion, three against -- in New York City. Each evening begins at 6:00P with a complimentary cocktail period. As you enter the theater before the debate starts at 6:45P, you cast your vote for or against the evening's motion. Those results are displayed midway through the debate as each side makes its statements. After all six panelists speak, the audience has a chance to ask the speakers questions and vote again. The debate finishes with brief summations from the panelists, the votes are tallied and a winning side is declared.

  • Mrs. Cheney problematically frames the issue within an inaccurate and simplified conception of good and evil without actually knowing the history of the region. She also overlooks the reality of American foreign policy in the ME, despite her nicely packaged speech that shields itself with the words "democracy" and "freedom," the actions taken by the US in the region signal to a complete lack of interest in the fate of freedom in the ME and are instead solely concerned with US economic interests.

  • I was really impressed hearing Liz Chenney against the motion and her clarity of ideas when said the terrorists have no value for individual lives, considers women as chattels and have faith in perverted version of Islam & they use young people living in societies with despair to do the dirty job of blasting.

I see Liz Chnney in the making of President of United States of America to become the first woman President of this great country.

  • The gay one is her sister.

  • True, the question is not whether democracy is desirable, but how can America be trusted to spread democracy when it has a history of supporting oppressive regimes to further its own selfish interests?

  • Wow look at the hate speach. One day you may be arrested for such talk based on your own leftist laws. Anger is always the first reaction when you lose your argument hands down.

  • She is a very good speaker
